Oklahoma HR Games

The HR Games are an exiting and fun way to motivate and prepare students for PHR certification. They consist of a one or two-day series of game show style matches between teams of up to three undergraduate students from various colleges and universities. The questions for the matches are divided into categories similar to those used in the PHR certification exam (Management Practices, Selection & Recruitment. Training & Development, Compensation & Benefits, Employee/Labor Relations and Health, Safety & Security).

The HR Games are an event that offers the opportunity to bring professional chapter volunteers, students and student chapter advisors together in a meaningful way. The effort it takes to plan and conduct the games is worthwhile and beneficial to the professional members as well as the students. The volunteers conducting the games get a refresher course in the body of knowledge required of a human resource professional as they listen to the students answer questions. The students receive an opportunity to network with other students and display their knowledge to HR practitioners.

Visit the Society for Human Resource Management website for information about preparing a team for competition.

The Payoff for All of Your Hard Work: The purpose of this state event is to prepare students for the SHRM Southwest Regional HR Games Competition in March to compete with other universities in our region. At this time, the SHRM website does not have a date posted for the regional competition. The Oklahoma State Council for Human Resources will be covering travel expenses for the winning team to the games as well as covering the hotel room cost. Other teams who compete in the state games are eligible to attend the Regional event at their own expense.

OSU HR Team Wins Congeniality Award at Denver

(March 25, 2009 Stillwater, OK) – Four students from Oklahoma State University’s Management Department competed at the Southwest Regional Human Resource Games. The team captured the Congeniality award at the competition which was held March 20th and 21st in Denver, Colorado.

“The Congeniality award was voted on by all conference participants that included other student teams, the professional HR volunteers and other student chapter advisers who were there,” said Tom Stone, professor in the department of management and team adviser.

The HR Games are an academic bowl for human resource students sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management. The goal of this Jeopardy-style competition is to prepare students for the professional human resources exam. Teams with the best record at the end of the matches compete in the championship round for first and second place.

Throughout the two-day event, team members were able to network with students from other universities and professionals in human resource management. The event is designed to benefit everyone involved – giving students a chance to showcase their abilities while giving professionals a review of the regulations for their industry.

“The experience was great – going to a conference like this helps me understand further the value of my membership to a national professional organization,” said Andre Storey, team captain. “You get the chance to interact with professionals and students that could be the introduction to your next opportunity – over 70% of jobs are filled through some form of networking.”
